Natural dyes were used only until 1853 when the first synthetic dye, mauve was developed. Today most dyeing is done easily and inexpensively using synthetic dyes. However the art of natural dyeing challenges and excites fiber artists to discover the beauty and experience of using nature for the color source. In our studio we use and teach both synthetic and natural dyes on fabric, yarn and fiber. Dyeing is an art as well as a spontaneous experiment in color!
The techniques of dyeing are numerous- we teach space, bag, resist, tub and immersion dyeing. We hold special events and workshops for natural dyeing.
